Music trumps video and videogames to be stranded with on desert island

Retailers give their desert island entertainment tips

18 July 2014: More people would take solace in a music album, rather than a video or videogame if they were stranded on a desert island, according to research from the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA).

When they were asked what they would choose to entertain them if they were marooned, more than 47% chose an album compared with 30% for a film or TV programme and just 23% for a videogame.

But the survey of 1,342 adults reveals sharp differences by age and gender:

  • While 27% of males opted for a videogame, just 17% of females felt the same;
  • While music was the top choice overall, results were reversed among the under 25s with just 23% opting for an album and 48% choosing a videogame;
  • Videos are far more likely to be chosen by females (35%) than males (26%).

ERA Director General Kim Bayley said, “More than 70 years after the launch of the BBC’s Desert Island Discs, here is clear confirmation that we remain a nation of music lovers. But the strong showing for videogames among the under-25s and video among women shows preferences are fragmenting. Luckily entertainment retailers have something for everybody.”

With the school holidays fast approaching, members of the Entertainment Retailers Association have come up with a handpicked selection of desert island-themed entertainment:
