Award winning composers turn talents to advertising

A new creative venture between some of the country’s top composers and Universal Music UK’s creative and commercial division Globe looks to redefine the creation of music for advertising. The project - a first for the recorded music business - launches with composers including Grammy winner David Arnold, Bafta nominated Ilan Eshkeri, Joby Talbot and Dickon Hinchcliffe.

Between them, the composers have written scores for some of the most commercially and critically acclaimed films around including The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, Independence Day, Gravity, Layer Cake, Project NIM, Alpha Papa, Quantum of Solace and Tomorrow Never Dies.

The collective will be creating bespoke music for commercials drawing on the artistic processes which go into scoring a movie. Their work will be supported by the synch team of Universal Music UK’s Globe division, bringing the composers and ad agencies one step closer to the artists, labels and divisions of the UK’s leading music company. Among them are Decca - the label behind soundtrack releases such as The Hobbit, Philomena and The Kings Speech - and Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most famous recording studios with a rich history in soundtrack recording. Artist collaborations and record releases are expected to emerge from the relationship.

The project has been curated by one of the UK’s leading film music supervisors and former Island A&R Director Nick Angel who says, “You can’t underestimate the importance of music in bringing a visual to life, and composers that work in film know better than anyone just how to do that. It’s an opportunity to bring cinematic music to a different world.”

The project is set to complement the sync services already offered to advertising agencies by Globe. The division’s MD Marc Robinson says, “We are bringing the very best film composers into this space with the full support and release mechanism of a label. As the creative bar is being raised in advertising and branded content, we want to ensure we can deliver across all areas of recorded music. Having worked across and released some of the UK films best score soundtracks, Decca is the perfect home to also release the music that would accompany these campaigns.”

Dickon Hinchcliffe, who recently finished composing the score for Tom Hardy’s latest film Locke, comments, "It's fantastic to be working with Universal Music and Globe on this - it's a great proposition and I'm looking forward to the creative challenge it offers."

Globe is the one-stop shop for all Universal Music UK’s sync, brand partnership and TV production activities.
