WhoSampled launch new iPhone app

19 Jun 2012
Music discovery service WhoSampled celebrates thirty years of sampling, and launch of new iPhone app, with new report into urban & electronic music

WhoSampled launch new iPhone app that lets you explore the musical connections in your music collection

Never-before-seen data & audionalysis sheds new light on the evolution of urban and electronic music

London, June 19 2012: A new study published today by music discovery service WhoSampled celebrates the iconic artists and tracks that helped define modern urban and electronic music.

The company has produced the study to celebrate thirty years of sample-based music, and today’s launch of its first smartphone app.

The new app scans your music collection, finds all the samples, covers and remixes in your favourite songs, and compares those songs to the originals. By establishing unique musical connections, WhoSampled helps you discover amazing music through the DNA of your own favourite songs.

The study has been produced using previously-unreleased data from WhoSampled’s unique database of samples, cover songs and remixes, and includes insights and commentary on the development of urban & electronic music from its team of expert curators.

While the extent of influence any one single artist or track has had on music may be open to debate, the number of times a track or artist has been sampled is a good measure as any. This study reveals, for the first time, the most-sampled artists and tracks in musical history and a whole lot more.

Highlights include;
- 1982: An iconic year in the history of sampling. How sample-based music dominates the charts thirty years on.

- The most sampled tracks and artists of all time

- Why James Brown could be most influential artist ever to have lived

- Amen Break, the six- second drum solo from 1969 that shaped a generation of electronic music

- From spaceships to Brazilian classic guitar, a history of sampling, 1956-2012

- WhoSampled’s five most-influential samples in musical history

- Unsung heros of digital music; ten artists you’ve heard, but never heard of

Having grown organically to date through word-of-mouth, the company believes that WhoSampled will become a must-have music service for fans of all musical genres.

WhoSampled.com Founder & CEO Nadav Poraz said:
“In an age of almost limitless choice, exploring the DNA of your favourite songs through related samples, covers and remixes is a great new way to discover music.

“Music fans of all genres are fascinated by the connections in their own collections, and with WhoSampled any track can start a musical journey through multiple genres and decades – helping you to discover great new music and share those finds with your friends.”
